FAQ
Most drummers - beginners through advanced - practice with a 5B drumstick. These are more commonly used than a 5A drumstick because they are slightly heavier and wider than a 5A. Heavier sticks help build and maintain wrist and finger strength.
5B drumsticks requires a bit more strength from the drummer such as a heavier grip versus a lighter grip when using a 5A drumstick. The heavier 5B builds greater wrist and finger strength, which is what we like to achieve when practicing the drums. You don't get that benefit from a lighter 5A drumstick.
The HingeStix 5B Practice Drumsticks are essentially a standard 5B weighted, pitch-matched pair of drumsticks with a patented finger pad mounted at the fulcrum that act as a "hinge", enabling the drumsticks to move freely between your thumbs and forefingers. This helps foster a loose grip, which is critical as you master control of the stick, build speed, and precision. After using the HingeStix 5B Practice Drumsticks a few minutes a day, drummers can instantly transfer that lighter grip and newly acquired finger control to their regular drumsticks.
5A drumsticks are slightly narrower in diameter and lightly than 5B drumsticks and are better for a more finessed drum stroke and a softer sound on the practice pad and drums set.

The HingeStix Practice Drumsticks are designed specifically to improve speed and rebound, but it doesn't stop there. The HingeStix teaches you the loose grip and also teaches you how to engage the rear fingers to properly control the stick.
With proper grip and overall stick control, the HingeStix Practice Drumsticks will improve your speed, rebound, and finger technique all in one practice drumstick.

YES. Depending on the type of practice drumsticks you are using, everything from the materials used, to the length, shape, grip, weight, and fulcrum can be different.
That said, the HingeStix Practice Drumsticks are basically a regular 5A or 5B drumstick milled and lathed out of hickory stock - same used by Vic Firth and ProMark - using standard drumstick milling and lathe jigs.
So in way, the HingeStix are no different than a regular drumstick. What makes the HingeStix Practice Drumsticks different are the patented hinges placed at the fulcrum enabling the drumstick to pivot freely, providing a loose grip experience, while engaging the back fingers to control the drumstick.
This is where the magic happens with the HingeStix. The secret to proper stick control, precision and speed, is too loosely hold the drumstick between the thumb and forefinger - at the fulcrum while engaging the rear fingers on both hands.
Drummers instantly build the wrist and finger strength, build finger control, and muscle memory that is immediately transferred to your regular drumsticks.
We recommend that everyone practice with the HingeStix for 5 minutes a day and immediately pick up your regular sticks to see the difference - instantaneously. The HingeStix shaves off months and years of trying to master the loose grip and build finger control.
We also recommend anytime a drummer feels they are losing the finesse or lacking finger control, to pick up their pair of HingeStix, practice for 5 minutes, to re-train their hands and fingers. It's like riding a bicycle.

One way to achieve a loose grip is to practice with the HingeStix Practice Drumsticks. They are designed for that exact purpose. The patented finger-pads - positioned at the fulcrum - not only act as hinges to enable the drumstick to rotate freely around the fulcrum, but they instantly position your thumb and forefinger in the correct location.
Once you experience the free floating rotating action of the HingeStix, you start building the muscle memory that will immediately transfer to your performing drumsticks.
Through muscle memory, you will be gripping the performance drumstick loosely to achieve that free floating rotating action.

Yes. This is exactly why we developed the HingeStix Practice Drumsticks. The patented finger-pad are placed at the fulcrum and act as a hinge enabling the stick to rotate freely around the hinges. This also positions the drummer grip at the proper location and forces the drummer to engage the rear fingers to control the drumstick. The stick will not work unless the rear fingers are fully engaged with the butt of the stick.
This configuration sets every drummer up for success. Practicing with the HingeStix 5-minutes a day reinforces the proper loose grip, trains and builds wrist strength and engages the rear fingers to control the drumstick.
There are no other practice drumsticks on the market like the HingeStix Practice Drumsticks.
